Professional Video & Photo Scanning Service
by Bottomley Enterprises
in business since 1999
Evansville, Indiana

Born out of a personal need to scan and import our own home movies and photographs dating back to 1963, we are now offering this service to the public. We own the equipment and the AI software to provide high quality film and VHS scanning services that were not possible just a few years ago.

We will scan in your analog film, whether it's 8mm or Super 8 movie film reels, VHS tapes, or still photos in the form of negative film strips (35mm, 110, or 126), or your 35mm slides. We will process your film reels (no sound) and/or your images with advanced AI technology that will improve the overall quality and resolution of your video or images. We will provide you with both the original analog scans as well as the AI enhanced scans. We can upload the data to a cloud folder where you can download the data, or to a thumb drive, and use it how you like. Once we receive your film, your project will be completed within 30 days of that date, typically much sooner. If you are located in the Evansville, Indiana area you can deliver your film personally to avoid the risk of it being lost in the mail.

Our fee structure is simple:

$20 per 50 ft. of film (8mm or Super 8)
$20 per 50 still images from 35mm, 110, 126 negatives or slides
$20 per VHS tape

This price includes AI movie and image processing to improve the overall quality of your movies and/or images. 50% of your project's estimated cost is due in advance, and the remaining 50% upon completion. We accept Venmo, Paypal, or cash (if local).

Email us at sales@bottomley.us or call us at 812-250-6423 to discuss your project!

The chart to the right will help you estimate how much 8mm or Super 8 film you have to scan.
Reel Diameter Film Length in feet Time length
3" Reel 50 2-3 minutes
4" Reel 100 5-6 minutes
5" Reel 200 12-14 minutes
6" Reel 300 19-22 minutes
7" Reel 400 26-29 minutes

Additional editing services, such as addition of music or text are available on request for additional fees.

Disclaimer: Note that we will take great care with your film and tapes, just as we do with our own, but there is always a small risk of damage, especially with old brittle film or tapes. Sometimes the process of scanning very old or poorly stored 8mm or Super 8 film, or VHS tapes will result in the film or tape breaking. If this happens, we will splice it back together, but this may result in a loss of some frames. We cannot be held responsible for your film or the results. That said, most people are very impressed with the result, which for 8mm or Super 8 CAN be comparable to modern HD footage if the film is in good condition.  Our end product of 8mm and Super 8 is typically 1440x1080p after we run it through an AI process to clean up the images, and we also perform full-frame stabilization which helps to minimize the frame jumping from frame to frame which is typical of film footage.

Be aware that VHS tapes are far from HD quality.  They are lower quality than 8mm or Super 8 films, as you can see from the below chart. That said, we will de-interlace, stabilize, and upscale VHS from it's NTSC native format of 720x480i to 1440x960 resolution.  This process can sometimes approximate HD trough AI interpolation, but it will never be as good as true digital HD.

Format Resolution (Approx.) Pixel Equivalent Quality Notes
8mm Film ~700–1,000 lines 1–1.5 MP Grainy, vintage look; better than VHS.
Super 8 ~1,000 lines ~2 MP Sharper and more detailed than 8mm.
VHS ~240 lines ~0.33 MP Low quality. Soft. Prone to artifacts.
DVD 720x480 (NTSC) ~0.35 MP Digital. Sharper than VHS but limited.
HD 720p 1280x720 0.92 MP Entry-level HD; clear and vibrant.
HD 1080p 1920x1080 2.07 MP High sharpness; far better than DVD.

Below is VHS footage from Kramer's Lake - on the left is raw footage after importing from VHS and on the right is after the AI process.  While it's certainly not perfect HD quality, the difference is rather obvious.
